A car battery is a box of chemistry, and chemistry runs faster when it's hot. Two things happen inside a lead-acid battery during a Cyprus summer. First, electrolyte evaporates: the liquid that carries the battery's charge slowly boils away, and in a sealed modern battery it can never be topped up. Second, plate corrosion accelerates: the internal lead grids that store and deliver energy corrode faster with every degree of heat, permanently reducing the battery's capacity. Here's the part most drivers miss. In August, a weakened battery gets away with it: the engine is warm, the oil is thin, and warm battery chemistry delivers decent cranking power even from a tired unit. The damage is real, but it's hidden.

Then the first cooler mornings arrive. Engine oil thickens slightly, the chemistry inside the battery slows down, and the same engine suddenly demands more cranking effort from a battery that has less to give. That's why the classic Cyprus battery failure isn't an August story — it's the car that started perfectly all summer and then refuses to turn over on a cool October or November morning, usually at the worst possible moment.

Yes, if the battery is two years old or more. A warm battery in a warm engine bay can deliver a confident start right up until close to the end of its life — summer starting performance tells you very little about the reserve left inside.
